Morris, George K. (University of Georgia, Athens), and William L. Williams. Inhibition of growth of Lactobacillus bulgaricus by purine deoxyribonucleotides. J. Bacteriol. 90:715-719. 1965.-An inhibition of growth of Lactobacillus bulgaricus GS was observed with deoxyadenylic acid and deoxyguanylic acid. Deoxynucleotides of cytosine, thymine, and uracil, and the deoxynucleosides of adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine were inactive as inhibitors. The inhibition was reversed by liver extract (a crude source of two unidentified growth factors for this organism). With suboptimal concentrations of liver extract, the inhibition was reversed by nucleotides of adenine, guanine, uracil, cytosine, and thymine. When the medium contained partially purified sources of the two growth factors rather than crude liver extract, fewer compounds reversed the inhibition. Adenylic acid and guanylic acid reversed the action of either inhibitor. Inosinic acid reversed inhibition caused by deoxyguanylic acid, but not that caused by deoxyadenylic acid. Thymidylic acid reversed inhibition caused by deoxyadenylic acid better than that caused by deoxyguanylic acid. Uridylic acid and cytidylic acid were no longer effective in reversing the inhibitions. This organism preferentially responded to monophosphorylated compounds as inhibitors and as reversers of inhibitions. Studies on the acid-soluble nucleotide pool revealed an accumulation of adenosine triphosphate, guanosine triphosphate, and an unidentified compound which resembled a nucleotide in its physical properties. These data cannot be explained by known metabolic pathways of nucleic acid biosynthesis. This organism responds differently from other related organisms to nucleic acid derivatives; therefore, it may be a new useful tool for studying nucleic acid metabolism and biosynthesis.

Effect of Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus on growth performance, gut microbial flora and digestive enzymes activities in Tor grypus (Karaman, 1971)

In this study, two main probiotics (Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp < em>. bulgaricus) were isolated from the intestine of Tor grypus and their effects on growth performance, gut microbial flora and digestive enzymes activities (i.e., α-amylase, lipase, trypsin, chymotrypsin, and alkaline phosphatase) of Tor grypus (Karaman, 1971) were determined. Juveniles of T. gry...

The Effect of Ribonucleotides on the Deoxyribonucleic Acid Metabolism of Lactobacillus acidophilus R-26*

La&bacillus (Thermobacterium) acidophilus R-26 has a specific requirement for a preformed deoxyribonucleoside residue. Oligodeoxyribonucleotides and 5’-deoxyribonucleotides are active. However, this requirement is not replaced by vitamin Blz (1, 2). Previous nutritional studies have shown that ribonucleotides inhibit the deoxyribonucleoside activity’ of 5’-deoxyribonucleotides for L. acidophili...

Postgenomic analysis of streptococcus thermophilus cocultivated in milk with Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus: involvement of nitrogen, purine, and iron metabolism.

Streptococcus thermophilus is one of the most widely used lactic acid bacteria in the dairy industry, in particular in yoghurt manufacture, where it is associated with Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus. This bacterial association, known as a proto-cooperation, is poorly documented at the molecular and regulatory levels. We thus investigate the kinetics of the transcriptomic and proteo...

Effect of Temperature and pH on Formulating the Kinetic Growth Parameters and Lactic Acid Production of Lactobacillus bulgaricus

Background and Objectives: Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp bulgaricus is widely used in dairy industries as a starter for yogurt production. This study was designed using response surface methodology (RSM) in 12 batch pH-controlled cultures of Lactobacillus delbrueckii sub-ssp. bulgaricus for determining the effect of temperature and pH on the biomass production of a native strain of L. bulgaricu...
